FAQ (Frequently Asked Questions)
What is a 'discussion list'?
A discussion list is a group of people, who have a common interest, in
this case the ESS. When you 'subscribe' you will receive any message any
person 'posts' to the list, and any message you 'post' to the list will
be received by everybody else. You may receive these messages as individual
messages, whenever they are posted. Or you may receive them as a 'digest',
which is a bunch of messages posted usually once a day, as a single e-mail
message.
If you have an e-mail account, you can go the the appropriate list server,
and 'sign on', or 'subscribe'. Each list server has a slight variance on
how this in done, so if you want to join a 'list' follow the links below,
and follow the instructions. If you have difficulty go to the 'list moderator'
for help.
E-mail List vs Newsgroups?
With most newsgroups, you don't have to subscribe, you just point your
server to the newsgroups they 'collect' and select the one/s you want to
read. You can also 'post' to most newsgroups with out having to subscribe.
Which also lends it self to a lot of garbage and advertising in newsgroups.
Also posting to open newsgroups puts your e-mail address on public display,
and you may quadruple the size of you junk mail, as the robots collect
the e-mail address of people who post.
Most e-mail lists are run by the computer, and once you subscribe you will
be given a FAQ, and a list of commands you can send to the computer who
'runs' the list. With these commands you can set up how you want to receive
the messages, and many other options.
The Moderator is a person/s who moderates the list. If the discussions
get to heated, or to personal, or to far off topic, they will step in and
restore order. Each list has a distinct personality. The list Moderator
even has the ability to 'screen' you posts before they get to the list,
to make sure they are 'on topic'. Don't be offended if when you join a
list, your posts are screened before they are posted, it is a common way
of keeping off 'flames'.
How does discussion work on a 'list'?
Imagine your at a large party, in a large room. And you are invisible,
you can see only the people who are talking, and people can only see you,
when you talk. There are several conversations going on at one time, you
can move from group to group of people, listening and or sharing in the
conservation. You hear other groups conservation, and perhaps you want
to join in, perhaps not. Perhaps you want to start a new conversation.
It's all up to you. In most newsgroups, probably 75% of the people 'lurk'
for 95% of the time, they are invisible, until they talk. The topics are
endless, and varied. Something for everyone. Will you like it? Who knows.
I have friends who pay 40-50 bucks a month for cable and/or satellite TV
connections, I pay 20 bucks a month for my internet connection, and it's
10 times more entertaining than TV.
Note: E-Mail lists
change and evolve. Over the last 12 years, there have been Many a list,
that has come and gone. When a list is started the 'owner' may vision who
is joining, and what the discussions will be, but nothing is certain until
people start talking. Also when a new list comes on 'line', that
may take some people away from other lists to join the new list.

ESS Chat Rooms
Each of the "Yahoo Groups", feature a live chat 'room'.
This is real time chat, where what ever you type is seen on the screen
of all who are in that room, at the same time. No special software is needed.
There used to be a group of people using the 'chat' feature, but today
is or they are not used much. If you would wish to use this, Just a note
on one of the lists, stating a time, would probably bring some people out
to 'chat'.
