I got my first Springer on a rescue mission from an animal shelter, knowing nothing about the breed, just looking for a companion while pheasant hunting. His tail was cropped too short, he blinked birds and his mouth was questionable, but that didn’t matter at the time. What meant most was that I was having a lot of success producing pheasants and my friends and I were having a great time. As I reflect back, out of all the birds we shot over this dog, I can only remember one time where we lost a bird. When looking for another dog, it was suggested that I attend a Springer field trial. To say the least, I was very impressed; and on that day, I walked away knowing I had to have one of those exciting little dogs. Little did I know it would be a life changing event. Now, 20+ years later, with too many miles and field trials to remember, I look back on the opportunities afforded me, not only to trial some pretty competitive dogs, but the pleasure to judge some truly great dogs as well. This along with the numerous friendships developed throughout the years, have made this time in the field, truly memorable. Time spent has taught me that these dogs we all have a passion for, are capable of doing amazing things if given the opportunity, and if totally prepared to handle all situations, usually do pretty well in this game we play. Of course, having lady luck on your side doesn’t hunt either. I am deeply honored to have been selected by my peers to once again judge the National Amateur Championship and am looking forward to walking behind some of the finest dogs in the country. May the wind be with all those who have entered this prestigious event. God Bless. Tom Menzel |
