Growing up with allergies delayed my association with dogs until I met and married my wife, Debbie; she wasn’t going to be denied a life with a 4-legged companion. My only input was that at least it should be a bird dog as I had enjoyed upland hunting when younger and was always intrigued about how much better it might be with a dog. Since our first Springer muddied our floors in 1989, I have been hooked on training, competing, hunting, and judging field events. Sold the boat, sold the condo, and the golf clubs are gathering dust. Moved to 35 acres and built a 6-run kennel and a pigeon coop….oh, how life has changed and with no regrets! It always strikes me how judging spaniels fills me with energy and excitement. I can spend the entire day in the field and never realize how tired I am until my head hits the pillow. With its flair, style and kindness, the Springer has captured the essence of bird dog companion and it’s difficult for me to imagine ever being without one. I am looking forward to judging the National Amateur with Cindy, whom I first met many years ago when Debbie & I travelled to Colorado to run a few trials. We were newcomers to the sport then and I recall the warm greeting we received from everyone there which underscores all the reasons I love this sport..…in the end, it’s really all about the good dogs and good friends you have the chance to know. Having the opportunity to compete in a national is the goal of most everyone who picks up a whistle and enters their first trial. It takes a lot of time and energy to get here and I am honored you have placed your trust in me by selecting me to judge the 2008 National Amateur. May the “trial gods” smile upon you! Tom Schoene |
