I was fortunate to be born into a family of outdoor enthusiasts, my father and grandfather passed on their hunting heritage, spaniels and labs were always part of our family. The field trial bug struck in the late seventies, I have been actively involved with field trialing, training and hunting with springer spaniels ever since. I have travelled across the US and Canada participating in the field trials, meeting and enjoying the many participants. Many mentors have assisted, educated and enlightened me thru the years, with the most memorable being the late Barney Zeigler, the gentle giant from Pryor, Oklahoma, a true friend. Previously I have had the opportunity to judge a Canadian Springer National in ‘96 with Kerm Gillund, in ‘99 the US National Open with Roger Houk and in 2004 the US Cocker National with Andrew Green. I am honoured to be selected to judge the 2006 US Amateur National Springer Championship with my co-judge Tim Lindsey. Over several decades I have had the pleasure and enjoyment of judging, handling and gunning in many fine springer spaniel events. The competitive nature of our sport has aided in the refinement of our breed, enhancing the bird finding and natural abilities, mixed with control and teamwork. The continued growth and popularity of Springer Spaniel field trials is a testimonial to the many owners, trainers, breeders, importers and competitors that support the sport and the spaniel breed. Special thanks to the National Amateur Championship Committee, Rocky Mountain Interclubs and their associates for their hard work and dedication to host this year’s event in the Hutchinson area of Kansas. To every participant, savour the moment, as you have all earned the right to be running with the best of our breed. I trust everyone will enjoy this year’s event.
