Handler Instructions - National Amateur 2005

These are the instructions that will be given to each handler by Judges Mark Haglin and John Wright

I will tap to send you on a retrieve. You will be sent on all birds that are down.

Continuing to whistle or hup your dog on the flush will cause a lower score. Do what you must to keep your dog steady however excessive handling to hup will not score high.

On an honor - keep your dog on the honor until I tell you to handle. Then you can bring the dog in or leave him out there unless we are in the way of the brace mates retrieve. Then I will tell you to quietly handle your dog out of the area. Here again any excessive handling to keep your dog on the honor while the brace mate is on the retrieve so as to cause interference will not look good in the judges book.

Take all runners outside the course. If we lose the runner we will go back to the course and continue on and the run will be judged accordingly with the whole series in mind.

Show me the dog can take a runner to the centerline if the opportunity provides itself however then show control on stopping on the centerline and calling the dog off and continue on down the course. On a rare occasion we may continue on with the runner crossing the centerline if we are behind the brace mate and if the cover warrants a quick find.

Taking a runner down the course can be handled either one of two ways. Continue on the bird passing ground and possibly the next plant or you may stop the dog on the runner, continue to quarter your course until the dog picks up the runner again. Either way will be OK for judgment.
